MS Exchange is usually installed on all versions of Windows 95.
Although
a powerful package, it is unnecessarily complicated for most
users.
Depending on your version of Windows 95 and the web browser you are
using
you may have additional email programs to choose from. If you
have
Windows 3.1 you will have Internet Mail included with Internet
Explorer.
To see which email programs are available on your computer, open
Internet
Explorer, select View, Options, Programs.
Under Mail and News, see what is available by clicking on the down
arrow. Your choices of email software are listed here.
Select Internet Mail if available. If you do not show
Internet Mail, choose another option and take note of your
selection.
MS Exchange and Outlook use the same settings for email -
Outlook
integrates Exchange Inbox with the other features of Outlook..
1. Setting up
RIGHT click on the Inbox icon on your desktop. Left click on
Properties.
Highlight Internet Mail and click on Properties.
(If Internet Mail is not there, click Add, select Internet Mail,
then
OK. In rare cases Internet Mail is not available to be added. In
this case
you must go thought the Internet Explorer Set-up again - make sure
to select
Use Windows Messaging when asked. This sometimes offers you the change
to use Internet Mail - go to the top of this page to see what email
programs
you now have available.)
Type in your real name as you want it to be displayed.

you
click on Tools, Deliver Now.
This feature allows you to make multiple email messages while
off line.
3. Sending and receiving attachments.
When writing new email you can attach a file by clicking on
Insert,
File, then select the file.
When receiving an attachment it will be indicated as a paper clip.
Click on the paper clip to open the attachment. If the
attachment
doesn't know which program to use to open the file you must select a
program
that supports the format of the file received.
4. Filtering
Filtering is possible, but offers limitations in what you can
filter
on, or from. You can set the Inbox to view mail sent from people you
have
already entered into your Contacts folder, the Personal Address
book,
or Outlook Address book.

Filtering Junk Email
Junk Mail is becoming an increasing and annoying problem with
Internet
Email. With the filtering options of the above mail programs, you
can screen
your mail as it arrives and direct a certain amount of junk mail to
the
Trash folder of your email program. You should be aware that junk
mailers
constantly change and falsify their addresses. This makes the task
of filtering
their mail much more difficult.
Sending and receiving attachments.
One of the nice features of email is that it is easy to send file
attachments.
You should consider that the receiver of your attachment may sometimes
have difficulties reading them. There are two ways to code and
decode attachments
- while most email programs will do this automatically you should be
aware
that both sender and receiver must both use same protocol. The most
common
one is MIME, which is the default setting for newer email software.
MIME
allows sending any file as an attachments without altering the content
of the file. Since email attachments take a long time to download
for the
recipient (as long as it takes you to upload it), care should be taken
not to make the attached file too large. A rule of thumb is that it
takes
10 to 15 minutes per 1 MB to receive an attachment. The intended
recipient
may also have restrictions on his /her mailbox size, depending on
their
service provider. Make sure you are not filling up someone's
mailbox, causing
trouble for the receiver.
