The road stretches out in front of you to the west. It remains smooth, straight and level, but the land to the left and right begins to slope downward, more steeply on the left than on the right. Birds twitter amongst the leaves. As you walk along, the slope of the landscape permits you to catch glimpses through the trees of still water up ahead on the right. Clearly it is at least a sizable pond. The verdancy on the left is getting higher: shrubs, taller grasses, deciduous trees in twos and threes. A flash of gray: there is a stone pedestal a few meters off to the left of the road. You stop and examine the sky. The weather is still nice, and the going is easy. You could go forward, turn around and head back the way you just came, or stop and examine the pedestal.
